Chap Goh Meh
The 15th day of Chinese New Year, which is known as
Chap Goh Meh (Hokkien), marks the end of Chinese New
Year. Similar to the ushering in at Chinese New Year
Eve, families gather for a delicious spread and houses
are once again brightly lit. |
Prayers are held and followed by the blasting of fireworks
and crackers to bring a cacophonous end to the Chinese
New Year festivities.
In addition to that, Chap Goh Meh is also known as the
Chinese Valentine’s Day. On this day, single Chinese
women flock to temples in hopes of finding a prospective
suitor. Either that or these young women cast tangerines
or mandarin oranges into the sea or river with hopes
and prayers to find a good husband. Hmm…wonder
if that actually works!
